{"id":12176,"date":"2022-09-17T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-17T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anacecilia.digital\/en\/?p=12176"},"modified":"2022-12-28T10:09:47","modified_gmt":"2022-12-28T13:09:47","slug":"the-maths-of-productivity-progress-adopting-a-new-habit-and-then-quitting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anacecilia.digital\/en\/the-maths-of-productivity-progress-adopting-a-new-habit-and-then-quitting\/","title":{"rendered":"The Maths of Productivity Progress: Adopting a New Habit and Then Quitting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When we were talking about productivity and <strong>routines <\/strong>in the classroom, a graduate student commented that she had difficulty incorporating new management habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>I even start, but I don\u2019t stand firm in the new habit. I can&#8217;t keep up with the pace of change and quit.\u201d<\/em> \u2014 said the student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I replied that it happens to me too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conversation reminded me of an anthropologist\u2019s story whose book now eludes me. The researcher made an immersion in the Amazon rainforest and witnessed a curious scene\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An indigenous man was stacking sticks to light a fire, but his toddler son knocked over the pile. Apparently, there was the book &#8220;<em>Indigenous<\/em> <em>Parents Don&#8217;t Give In<\/em>&#8220;<sup>1<\/sup> available at the tribe&#8217;s library because the dad didn&#8217;t hit, didn&#8217;t yell, or even scold the little one. He just carried him away from the pile and resumed his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The child then returned, doing the same thing, knocking the sticks again. And the father calmly took him even further. This loop succeeded a few times until the pile could be completed and the fire ignited. The little boy was <strong>determined<\/strong>, but the father was more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Productivity habits require a lot of <strong>effort<\/strong>, <strong>patience<\/strong>, and, above all, <strong>time <\/strong>to be truly assimilated. Often you may need to start over again and again. But with each restart, the number of sticks is a little bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key is to focus on the old maxim, understanding how the maths of advancement works: three steps forward, two steps back. The result? A step ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It is important to note that though the process of habit change is easily described, it does not necessarily follow that it is easily accomplished. It is facile to imply that smoking, alcoholism, overeating, or other ingrained patterns can be upended without real effort. Genuine change requires work and self-understanding of the cravings driving behaviours.
