This Cookie Policy explains what cookies are and how we use them, the types of cookies we use, the information we collect using cookies and how that information is used, and how to manage the cookie settings.
What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are used to store small pieces of information. They are stored on your device when the website is loaded on your browser. These cookies help us make the website function properly, make it more secure, and provide a better user experience.
How Do We Use Cookies?
As most of the online services, our website uses first-party and third-party cookies for several purposes. First-party cookies are mostly necessary for the website to function the right way, and they do not collect any of your personally identifiable data.
Third-party cookies improve the visitor experience and provide additional functionality.
For example, Vimeo, where our videos are stored, installs cookies that allow the visitor to see the video embedded within the post itself without going to the video’s Vimeo page. They also collect video access statistics, which are passed on to us by Vimeo in an anonymised form (by numbers and graphs that do not identify individual users).
Upon entering our website, the cookie consent banner offers you full transparency. It allows you to view the description of each cookie used on the platform and decide whether to authorise them, putting you in control of your browsing experience.
Types of Cookies We Use
Necessary: Necessary cookies are required to enable the basic features of this site, such as providing secure log-in or adjusting your consent preferences. These cookies do not store any personally identifiable data. Example: Cloudflare Bot Management checks if you are human when filling out forms.
Functional: Functional cookies help perform certain functionalities with third-party features. Example: Vimeo cookies allow you to see the video embedded in the post.
Analytics: Analytical cookies are used to understand how visitors interact with the website. These cookies help provide information on metrics such as the number of visitors, bounce rate, traffic source, etc. Example: Vimeo graphs and the number of users accessing the embedded videos.
Performance: We are not using any performance cookies at the moment.
YouTube and Google Cookies That Will Be Deleted Soon
This website does not serve advertisements or collect data to personalise your browsing for advertising purposes.
However, when we embedded YouTube videos on this website, aiming to allow visitors to watch them without leaving the post, YouTube installed more than ten cookies on our blog.
So, we are deleting all embedded YouTube videos from the entire platform so that these cookies are also deleted. This process is ongoing.
YouTube collects this data, does not share it with us, and, in doing so, invades the privacy of our readers. In addition, YouTube suggests other videos at the end of the embedded video. If the blog reader clicks on any algorithm suggestions, they are taken to the YouTube website in another window.
There is no way to escape this venal YouTube business model, which is based on surveillance capitalism and the attention economy.
We also currently use Google Analytics to collect anonymised statistics on access to our website. However, to offer this service, Google also installs cookies on the blog, aiming to collect information about our visitors.
Google Analytics has been declared illegal in several European Union countries as far as GDPR is concerned.
For all these reasons, we are testing three other website access statistics services that respect your privacy and comply with the main data protection laws in force.
Therefore, advertising cookies, in addition to other types installed by YouTube and Google Analytics, will soon be deleted from this platform.
We are aware that by ceasing to use Google Analytics, we are reducing the statistical information we can obtain about our visitors. We are also at risk of having our content’s ranking compromised by these search engines. Not only because we deleted Google Analytics, but because we openly criticised these companies in our content. However, if this happens, it is the price to pay for having character.
This is not a monetised blog, and our first commitment is to our readers and digital ethics.
